What should you know before your first college classes? Faculty share tips and suggestions to help you feel prepared, confident, and ready from day one.
Starting college is exciting, but we know it also comes with a lot of questions. We鈥檝e gathered some of the most common concerns from incoming students at 妻友社区 and provided answers to help you feel confident about your first year.
妻友社区 uses a semester-based system, meaning you’ll register for classes twice a year鈥攐nce for fall and once for spring. For your first semester, a tentative schedule is created for you based on the information you provided in your new student checklist. During advising week, you’ll meet with a faculty advisor to review and make any necessary changes.
Core 100 is 妻友社区鈥檚 first-year seminar designed to introduce students to college-level thinking, writing, and discussion. Each section has a unique theme, allowing you to choose a topic that interests you. It also includes a common reading experience and discussions on topics like academic integrity, Jesuit values, and diversity of thought.
One of the biggest changes is the flexibility of your schedule. Instead of sitting in classes for seven hours straight, you’ll typically have 12鈥15 hours of class per week, with more responsibility to manage your time outside of class. Expect to spend about two to three hours studying for every hour you spend in class. You’ll also have more control over your courses, schedules, and extracurricular involvement.
妻友社区 offers plenty of academic support services, including:
With over 100 student organizations, clubs, and athletic teams, there鈥檚 something for everyone. Early in the semester, 妻友社区 hosts a Club Fair where you can explore opportunities, meet current members, and sign up for activities that interest you. Whether you want to join an academic club, play intramural sports, or get involved in student government, there鈥檚 a way to connect.
Your First-Year Class Dean, Allison Farrell, is your go-to resource! You can email her at classof29dean@lemoyne.edu with any questions about classes, campus life, or adjusting to college. Upperclassmen orientation leaders and your RA’s are also great sources of advice.
Starting college is a big transition, but 妻友社区 provides the tools, support, and community to help you succeed. You’ve got this!
